Why Some People Don’t Receive Healing (and How to Overcome Those Barriers)
One of the most difficult and honest questions in the life of faith is this:
“If God heals, why do some people not receive healing?”
It is not a question of doubt—it is a question of reality. Many sincere believers pray, stand, confess Scripture, and yet still struggle with symptoms, discouragement, or unanswered expectations.
But Scripture never presents healing as random, mysterious, or reserved for a select few. Instead, it shows that healing is part of Christ’s finished work—and that receiving it operates under spiritual laws just like salvation, forgiveness, and answered prayer.
Understanding the barriers to receiving is not about blaming people. It is about removing obstacles so faith can operate freely.
Let’s look honestly—and biblically—at the most common reasons people struggle to receive healing, and how those barriers can be overcome.
1. Not Being Fully Convinced It Is God’s Will
This is the biggest barrier of all.
Faith cannot function where there is uncertainty.
Scripture says:
“Let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.” — James 1:6 (KJV)
Many believers secretly wonder:
- “Maybe God is teaching me something through this.”
- “Maybe healing isn’t for today.”
- “Maybe it’s not His will in my case.”
But faith does not begin with hope—it begins with certainty.
Jesus never told a sick person: “Let me pray and see if it’s God’s will.”
Instead, He revealed God’s will through action:
“I will; be thou clean.” — Matthew 8:3
Healing is not something God sometimes wants.
It is something Christ already purchased:
“By whose stripes ye were healed.” — 1 Peter 2:24
How to Overcome This Barrier
You must become fully persuaded.
Romans 4:21 says Abraham was:
“Fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.”
This persuasion comes only through:
- Meditating on healing scriptures
- Renewing the mind with truth
- Rejecting traditions that contradict God’s Word
Faith begins when the argument ends.
2. Trying to “Earn” Healing Instead of Receiving It
Many people unknowingly treat healing like a reward instead of a gift.
They think:
- “If I pray enough…”
- “If I’m holy enough…”
- “If I deserve it…”
But healing, like salvation, is received by grace through faith.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith… not of works.” — Ephesians 2:8–9
Healing flows from the same finished work of Christ.
Jesus already paid the price.
You don’t earn healing—you receive it.
How to Overcome This Barrier
Shift your mindset from striving to receiving.
Faith is not effort—it is trust.
It says: “It’s already done. I take it now.”
3. Walking by Sight Instead of Faith
This is where many sincere believers struggle.
They pray for healing—but then immediately check symptoms.
They measure progress by feelings instead of by faith.
But Scripture defines faith this way:
“Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” — Hebrews 11:1
Faith believes before it sees.
This is exactly how Jesus operated with the fig tree:
“No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever.” — Mark 11:14
At that moment, nothing appeared to change.
But underground, the roots were already dead.
The visible change came later.
Healing often works the same way.
How to Overcome This Barrier
You must learn to treat God’s Word as more reliable than symptoms.
Faith says:
- “I believe I am healed even while symptoms remain.”
- “The Word is truth, regardless of what I feel.”
This is not denial—it is spiritual reality overriding physical appearance.
4. Doubt Through Conflicting Voices
Many people sabotage their own faith by listening to too many voices:
- Medical fears
- Negative testimonies
- Skeptical opinions
- Religious traditions
Jesus warned:
“Take heed what ye hear.” — Mark 4:24
Faith grows through hearing God’s Word.
Doubt grows through hearing fear.
You cannot feed both and expect faith to dominate.
How to Overcome This Barrier
Guard your spiritual atmosphere.
Fill your mind with:
- Scripture
- Testimonies of healing
- Faith-building teaching
Starve doubt by starving its sources.
5. Unforgiveness and Spiritual Hindrances
Sometimes the barrier is not lack of faith—but a spiritual blockage.
Jesus said:
“When ye stand praying, forgive.” — Mark 11:25
Unforgiveness, bitterness, and hidden sin can create spiritual resistance.
Not because God withholds healing—but because these things:
- Harden the heart
- Weaken faith
- Give the enemy footholds
How to Overcome This Barrier
Ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart.
Release forgiveness.
Repent quickly when convicted.
Healing flows more freely through a clean and surrendered heart.
6. Giving Up Too Soon
Many people pray, believe for a short time, and then quit when symptoms persist.
But Scripture shows that faith often involves perseverance.
“Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” — Galatians 6:9
The enemy knows he cannot stop God’s promise.
So he tries to stop your endurance.
How to Overcome This Barrier
Refuse to quit.
Faith is not just believing—it is continuing to believe.
Victory often belongs to those who simply refuse to let go.
The Most Important Truth: Healing Is Already Finished
At the heart of receiving healing is one central revelation:
Healing is not something God might do someday.
It is something Christ already accomplished.
Isaiah declared:
“With his stripes we are healed.” — Isaiah 53:5
Peter confirmed:
“By whose stripes ye were healed.” — 1 Peter 2:24
Notice the tense.
Not “will be healed.”
Healed.
Receiving healing is not convincing God to act.
It is believing what He has already done.
Final Encouragement
If you have struggled to receive healing, do not condemn yourself.
Every believer grows in faith.
Barriers are not signs of failure—they are opportunities for breakthrough.
Return to the Word.
Renew your mind.
Stand firm in what Christ finished at the cross.
And remember this truth:
Faith does not mean you never feel symptoms.
It means you believe God’s promise more than what you feel.
When that conviction becomes settled in your heart, healing moves from being a hope… to becoming a reality.
