The Woman Who Rides the Beast: Unveiling the Catholic Church as the Great Whore of Revelation 17
In the prophetic visions of the Book of Revelation, the Apostle John describes a mysterious and ominous figure: a woman arrayed in opulent attire, riding upon a scarlet-colored beast, drunk with the blood of saints, and holding sway over kings and nations.[1] This "great whore" symbolizes a corrupt religious system that has deceived the world, blending spiritual authority with temporal power in a web of idolatry and persecution. Drawing from the unerring truths of Scripture and the insights of faithful witnesses through the ages, this article exposes how the Roman Catholic Church fulfills this prophecy with chilling precision. From her seat upon the seven hills of Rome to her scarlet-robed hierarchy, her alliances with earthly rulers, and her bloody history during the Inquisition, the evidence points to her as the apostate entity foretold in God's Word. As we approach the last days, understanding this revelation is crucial for discerning the signs of the times and holding fast to biblical truth.
The Seat of Power: The Woman Upon Seven Hills
Revelation 17:9 declares, "And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth."[2] This imagery is no mere metaphor but a direct geographical and spiritual identifier. Ancient Rome, the eternal city, has long been known as the "City of Seven Hills"—the Aventine, Caelian, Capitoline, Esquiline, Palatine, Quirinal, and Viminal. The Vatican, the heart of Roman Catholicism, sits squarely within this landscape, wielding influence from this prophetic perch.
Historical observers have not shied away from this connection. The Reformers, standing against papal tyranny, recognized Rome's fulfillment of this prophecy. As one early witness noted, "Rome is the Seat of Antichrist, and the Pope is that Man of Sin."[3] This woman, adorned with gold and precious stones, represents a system that has elevated human traditions above divine commandments, merging pagan rituals with a veneer of Christianity. In the last days, as prophesied, this entity will intensify its deception, aligning with global powers to enforce a false unity that rejects the pure gospel of Christ.
The Colors of Corruption: Scarlet and Purple in the Hierarchy
The woman's attire in Revelation 17:4 is vividly described: "And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication."[4] These colors are not arbitrary; they mirror the ecclesiastical vestments of the Catholic hierarchy. Cardinals don scarlet robes, symbolizing their readiness to shed blood for the Church, while bishops and archbishops wear purple, denoting royalty and authority. This pompous display echoes the harlot's seduction, luring souls into spiritual adultery through rituals and relics that supplant the simplicity of faith in Christ alone.
Scripture warns against such ostentatious religion. In Isaiah 1:18, God invites, "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool."[5] Yet the Catholic system clings to these hues as badges of power, ignoring the call to repentance. Forefathers of the faith decried this. One Reformer proclaimed, "The Pope's scarlet robe is the blood of the saints, and his purple the mark of imperial blasphemy."[6] In the end times, these colors will signify the beast's final rage, as the woman rides forth to persecute the remnant who keep the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus.
The Fornication with Kings: Earthly Alliances and Submission
Revelation 17:2 reveals that "with whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication."[7] This spiritual unfaithfulness depicts how secular rulers have bowed to the Catholic Church's authority, granting her temporal dominion in exchange for religious endorsement. Throughout history, emperors and monarchs—from Charlemagne crowned by Pope Leo III to modern heads of state visiting the Vatican—have knelt before the papal throne, fulfilling the prophecy that the kings of the earth would yield to her seduction.
The Scriptures condemn such unions. In James 4:4, it is written, "Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God."[8] The Catholic Church's concordats with fascist regimes, such as those under Mussolini and Hitler, illustrate this fornication, where political power was traded for spiritual compromise. As a faithful expositor observed, "The kings have given their power to the beast, and the whore rides triumphant upon it."[9] In the last days, this alliance will culminate in a one-world system, where the woman orchestrates global apostasy, deceiving multitudes before her ultimate judgment.
Drunk with the Blood of Saints: The Inquisition's Legacy
Perhaps the most damning indictment is found in Revelation 17:6: "And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus."[10] The Roman Catholic Church's history is stained with the persecution of true believers during the Inquisition, where millions were tortured and executed for refusing to submit to papal doctrines. From the Waldensians and Albigenses to the Huguenots and Reformers, the Church's inquisitors wielded fire and sword in the name of orthodoxy, fulfilling the prophecy of a system intoxicated by martyrdom.
The Bible foretells this bloodshed. In Matthew 23:35, Christ laments, "That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias."[11] Echoing this, a Protestant forefather declared, "The papacy is the very Antichrist, who hath exalted himself above God, and opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name."[12] Documents from the era reveal the Church's role in these atrocities, with papal bulls authorizing the extermination of heretics. As we near the end, this spirit of persecution will revive, targeting those who refuse the mark of the beast and hold to the faith once delivered to the saints.
The Last Days: Judgment and the Call to Separation
In the prophetic timeline, Revelation 18:4 issues a divine command: "Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues."[13] As the last days unfold, the Catholic Church, as the great whore, will play a pivotal role in the rise of the Antichrist, merging with a global ecumenical movement that dilutes biblical truth. Her influence over education, politics, and religion—seen in Jesuit infiltration and Vatican diplomacy—prepares the way for the final deception.
Yet Scripture assures victory for the faithful. Revelation 19:20 prophesies the beast's downfall: "And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet... These both were cast alive into a lake of fire."[14] Reformers urged separation from this system, with one stating, "We must flee from Babylon, that great city, lest we share in her destruction."[15] By following the money trails of Vatican wealth, the paper trails of historical edicts, and the testimonies of defectors, the evidence substantiates this exposure. In these end times, let us heed the Word, defend the King James Bible's purity, and stand with the doctrines of the Puritans and Reformers against the encroaching darkness.
